Are You Prepared for a Survival Situation?

By Steve Thibeault

None of us ever think it will happen to us, but unfortunately at some stage doing our life we are going to come across a survival or medical situation. The odds are that this is especially likely to happen if we are in a remote or outback environment, such as on a camping trip or expedition of some kind. However, living in the United States, most of us are prone to some kind of natural disaster or other and can also find ourselves in a survival situation caused by mother nature.

Always be prepared and have a specially thought out plan to help your family get through a survival situation, should it arise. It would be no good trying to plan when something is upon you and so you should think all eventualities through and make sure that you address all potential hazards as best as you can.

There's nothing worse than the feeling of vulnerability when you are involved in a particularly harrowing situation. Make sure that you have an emergency survival kit which will certainly be of benefit to you as you wait for professional help to arrive or to get rescued.

Whatever the position you are likely to face, there are different types of survival kit specifically made for the purpose. For example, you could carry one in your vehicle, keep it at home, or when you go out into the wilderness on an expedition. Don't think that you only need a first aid kit if you are going on this kind of adventure, either as you should keep one handy at all times.

Every type of survival situation is different, but you will almost invariably need shelter, first aid, fire, food and water to get you through it. If you have a typical family of four, you should invest in an emergency survival kit designed for that family size, which can sustain you for up to 72 hours and get you through your situation if needed.

You will not always have adequate notice of an impending disaster. While a hurricane can be tracked and we will have plenty of advance warning, other weather phenomena such as a flash flood, tornado or earthquake will strike without warning. As such, you should have a comprehensive survival kit in a known location and every member of the family should be aware.

Remember that you could find yourself in a survival situation at any time and in any place. It'll be too late then to rue the fact that you did not get a survival kit in advance, so act accordingly.

Adequate choices are available to cover every type of situation if you plan in advance. You could pick up a multi-day, multiperson kit if appropriate or just a pocket pak, but do be prepared. If you are an adventurer by heart or have experience you will probably already have taken into account your survival situation needs.
