Green Spaces Boost The Body And The Mind

By Carlo Mueres

The closer you live to nature, the healthier you're likely to be.

For instance, people who live within 1 kilometer of a park or wooded area experience less anxiety and depression, Dutch researchers report.

The findings put concrete numbers on a concept that many health experts had assumed to be true.

"It's nice to see that it shows that, that the closer humans are to the natural environment, that seems to have a healthy influence," said Dr. David Rakel, director of integrative medicine and assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

One previous study had noted fewer health inequalities between rich and poor people in areas with lots of green space, and other studies have echoed these health benefits. But much of this research had relied on people's perceptions of their physical and mental health.

This new objective look at the matter involved scouring medical records of 345,143 people in Holland, assessing health status for 24 conditions, including cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological diseases. This information was then correlated with how much green space was located within 1 kilometer and 3 kilometers of a person's postal code.

People living in more urban environments had a higher prevalence of 15 of the 24 conditions, with the relationship strongest for anxiety disorder and depression.

In areas with only 10 percent of green space, about 2.6 percent of people experienced anxiety disorders, compared to 1.8 percent of people in areas with 90 percent green space. The disparity was evident for depression as well - 3.2 percent of people living in more urbanized areas had depression versus 2.4 percent of those in more rural areas.

The health benefits were evident only when the green acres were within a kilometer, not at the 3 kilometer perimeter, except for anxiety disorders, gastrointestinal digestive disorders and so-called medically unexplained physical symptoms, the researchers said.

Children and poor people suffered disproportionately from lack of green acres, the researchers found.

The study findings were published online Thursday in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Any number of factors could account for the benefits of green space, experts said.

More natural sunlight, for instance, has been linked with a lower incidence of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and other benefits.

"If patients in hospitals have direct exposure to sunlight through a window or natural sunlight, hospital stays are shorter and patients have less complications," Rakel said. "That's been well-established.

More light also means more vitamin D in the skin, which has been found to elevate mood and improve muscle strength, he added.

And fresh air, obviously, has a benefit as well, as do the exercise opportunities that come with more open space.

But much of the relief may come from the simple ability to de-stress.

"If we're in a busy street with more technology and artificial things, we're going to be multi-tasking more, which prevents us from focusing on one thing," Rakel said. "In this day and age, we really need some sort of centering practice. We need to get our mind out of its own stories and focus on something that's pure. Nature is a beautiful example of that - it's the way things were meant to be.

Why Choose to Buy Electric Guitar

By Jaquelin Michaels

If you are looking to buy an electric guitar, for either yourself or as a gift for the aspiring guitarist in your life, you might be confused by all of the choices out there. All guitarists stress the importance for beginner players to begin their creative exploits with an easy and high quality instrument. Beginning by playing an electric guitar is not as hard for new musicians than figuring out how to play an acoustic-style guitar because electric guitars tend tohave lighter gauge strings as well as lower playing movement while requiring decreased hand strength in order to play the guitar. Basically: when you choose to buy an electric guitar, it is significantly easier on the fingers of the beginning musician. Which allows for maximum ease of play without the discouragement of painful fingers that usually accompanies learning to play on an acoustic unit.

Deciding on A Well-Known Name Guitar is a Good Choice

When you purchase an electric guitar, it is often the wisest choice to stick with a brand name of guitar that is well known and has a long history of producing quality instrument models that will last through several years of usage. The extra money is usually more than well worth it, both in terms of performance and in the lifespan of your investment. Good choices include Gretsch, Gender, Gibson, and Fender branded electric guitars. And do not worry if your budding guitarist decides that they suddenly don't like to play guitar after all, by purchasing a high quality, brand name electric guitar model, you can generally get most of your investment back when you decide to sell the guitar to another person. Good guitars hold their value.

Are Used Guitars An Option?

Some people do find that they can find good used guitars at reasonable prices. While buying an electric guitar that is used is not like buying a used computer because a guitar will never get to be obsolete or outdated, there are some disadvantages. For instance, you will not be getting a warranty, although as mentioned earlier, used guitars are often as expensive as brand new ones. And you usually cannot request a refund of your money if the guitar has problems later on down the road like you can with a brand new electric guitar.

Facts to Be Aware of Before You Buy Electric Guitar

Before heading out for some shopping comparisons on electric guitars, it is a good idea to contact an experienced guitarist for solid advice. You should also have a price range already in mind. A brand new electric guitar model can be a couple hundred dollars in cost or even more than that. Also be aware of any possible upgrades that you may like to get when you purchase an electric guitar as several shops charge less money for the upgrades along with the guitar than they otherwise would for upgrading your guitar at a later date.

Top 8 Ways To Spot A Poker Bluff (Even Online!)

Spotting a poker bluff online is tricky. In offline play, you can watch body language and get physical cues as to when someone is bluffing. Usually unless they are a professional, all poker players give off signs they are bluffing through body language. Online, though, you don't have the ability to read body language, so how can you tell if someone is bluffing?

People still give off signals, even online, that they are bluffing. Some are better at covering, but others are a little loose and easy to catch. Either way, the following are 8 ways that you can spot a poker bluff online.

1. Pay attention to chatter. Some people cannot seem to hold their tongue. Some people who bluff will be chatting away. What they say may not match up to how they play and that is what you are watching for. Players may just reveal their bluff in what they say without ever realizing it.

2. A person bluffing may raise before the flop and quickly raise again. They are driving up the pot and hoping you don't have a hand you feel confident about.

3. If someone jumps into the game quickly or chooses to sits out and then changes their mind right as the cards are being dealt then they are someone to watch. They probably won't have a good hand, but are simply impatient. If they keep raising or they call quickly then chances are they are bluffing.

4. It is always smart to watch someone who goes all in with a low show on the table. This person may just be ready to call it a day and figures why not go out on a high note.

5. Get to know playing styles. The best players mix up their style, but your average player will usually follow the same general patterns. If someone starts playing odd then they should be watched. They may have a good hand, but chances are they are trying to bluff. Get to know the other players styles so you can spot when things are not quite right.

6. Watch aggressive or loose players. If you notice someone who is always playing aggressively then you never really know when to trust them because they cannot possible have an amazing hand every time.

7. Another thing about watching players - watch what is shown at the end. If someone keeps falling short then you know they like to bluff and you will keep an eye on them in the future.

8. People who play fast are a danger. Someone who is just playing fast and not putting thought into what they are doing is a loose cannon. They may not even have a clue how to play. Don't let them get you. Watch what they play and don't buy into their bluff.

These 8 ways to spot a poker bluff should help you to start being able to cut through the bluffs that are thrown your way online. After some practice and some time you should start to be able to spot online bluffs just as easily as you do during an offline game.

Know More About Dance, As A Performance Art Form

By Peggy Ryersen

Dance, if you want to put a description to it, is simply a form of art, as well as sport. It can be described as rhythmic body movements done gracefully to music. Dance is also used as an emotional release or sometimes used in spiritual or social interactions. Included in this art form are body movements meant to express ideas in a silent non-verbal way. This can also be seen among animals, bees being just one example. There are even some sports that fall under one type or form of partnership dance, such as figure skating, synchronized swimming and even martial arts if the training is done as a synchronized dance in a sport setting.

Through the ages dance has been an expression using movements and a way of expressing emotions of various sorts. It can be found as a ceremonial and competitive art form, social, artistic, moral and many cultural settings. Dance's movement can also be the way of expressing a story such as a hunt or a silent non-verbal way to express the emotions of a courtship ritual.

Different types of dance forms can take the form of classical dance like the tango, ballroom dancing, ballet, and even the waltz. There are plenty of competitions in which these classical dances are held on a performance level. If you are interested in dancing as a career, you can go in for professional dancing with dance companies, become a choreographer for dance performances and even training fledgling dancers to dance in traditional, ethnic, and ceremonial dance forms. You can teach your students to perform as a solo dance performer, a partner Dance performer or take part in a properly choreographed group dance.

It is difficult to imagine dancing to the Blue Danube, for example, without music playing in the background, which is how both classical music and classical dance forms joined together, so to speak. Musicians arranged their Rhapsodies and Symphonies to enable anyone who was listening make movements they found complimentary such as gliding, swaying and to dip as they wished. This was the beginning of what we have today setting the stage to numerous dance forms.

There is a term you are probably familiar with, which is "dancing to your own drum". In this case, in rhythm and dance, this is simply dancing with no music. A form of this type of dance is tap dancing. It is in itself an amazing way of making music with a rhythmic tapping off of the feet.

The dance movements are supposed to relax and invigorate a person, because this sort of exercise not only gives him a pleasant workout, but also makes his body more flexible and graceful. The idea of dancing as a soothing and relaxing therapy is being used by therapists in the form of dance movement and dance therapy for better muscular coordination.

Regardless of the reason for wanting to dance, as long as you want to you should go for it!

How To Count Cards

Card counting is a common strategy used to play and win at blackjack. If you have wanted to learn how to count cards, but have been worried it is too hard, then read on. You are about to learn simple steps to counting cards that will get you started. If you want additional information there are plenty of great resources all over the internet that teach the various methods of card counting. This should be enough, though, to get you started in card counting.

The high-low system is one of the most common methods of counting cards. It is also one of the easiest systems to understand. Before you start to learn how to count cards, you need to understand that card counting is not really about counting the actually number of cards, but rather figuring the ratio of high to low cards that remain in the deck. It may seem confusing, but just follow along and you should start to understand.

Assigning Values

In the high-low system you will assign point values to each card. Low cards include 2,3,4,5 and 6. These cards get a value of plus one. High cards are the 10,jack,queen,king and ace. These cards get a value of minus one. Neutral cards are the 7,8 and 9. They get no value assigned to them.

To begin with learning to count cards you should practice memorizing the values of each card. Go through a deck over and over reciting the card values until you are sure you have them memorized.

Keep the Running Count

Once you are feeling that you have the card values memorized you can start working with keeping a running count. This is more practice to get you ready for the actual game.

To keep a running count you start with a value of 0. As you flip over cards from your deck you will add or subtract the values. For example, if you have a king, queen, 2 and 8 you would end up with a count of minus 1.

Keeping the running count will likely take much more practice that just memorizing the values. It is essential, though, that you get keeping the running count down perfectly. You should keep practicing until it becomes like second nature and you don't hesitate anymore in figuring the count.

True Count

Once you are ready to play an actual game and count the cards during the game you will go from a running count to the true count. To do this you keep the running count and divide it by the number of cards remaining in the deck. The true count will tell you what to bet.

If the true count is positive then bet more. If it is negative then don't bet as much. This allows you to play smart and only bet when you have a good chance of winning. In the end you will likely win more than you lose. Card counting can be a great way to start improving your odds at the blackjack table and help you start to make more when you play.

How The Top Poker Players Will Beat You

Have you ever wondered how the professional poker players get so good? What tricks do they use? What skills have they developed to be able to win so big? Most of all, how can you learn these things so you can start playing like a pro?

You need to develop the characteristics of a top poker player. You need to practice and start figuring out what things the pros do that you should do. Here are some tips on how to play like a pro:

- Know that you will lose. It is a fact that you will not win every hand. However, accept it. Don't let it get you down. Don't get into a slump. Don't let yourself believe that the odds are against you just because you see to be having a bad day. The odds stay the same. If you generally can expect that you have a 3% chance of losing in any given game then you will always have that 3% chance of loss. It doesn't matter what kind of day you are having.

- Focus on winning. Being greedy is a part of playing the game. Your goal is to win. Every player at the table has that same goal. You have to be focused on yourself. Don't make friends at the table. You should always be out for yourself and only yourself. Being greedy gets you focused and makes you better able to win.

- Don't bring your problems to the table. A good player leaves life behind when they sit down at the table. If you cannot get past something that has happened in your outside life then just don't play. You have to leave everything behind in order to really play the game.

- You must be focused and dedicated tot he game. Top players know that focus is key. You cannot be thinking about anything but the game. You cannot let anything take your attention away from the game. You must put everything into the game and be dedicated 100%.

Professional poker players are serious about the poker game. They are not out there to just have fun and socialize. They are there to win. If you want to play like a pro then you have to think and act like one. They look so serious for a reason - they are serious.

These 4 tips are going to help you to get into the same mindset as a pro. However, you will also have to work on your poker playing skills. Having the right attitude is one thing, but you also need to know how to play. So, practice. Play as often as you can and build up your skills. To be the best you must know the game inside and out. You have to have the right attitude and your mind must be focused. If you really want to be a top player then you can be. Just follow all the advice in this article, stick to it and one day you will be the top player everyone envies.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Review

By James Ronald Wellingston

So much is said about The Beatles legendary 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band but I think too much of what is said is about it's historical significance and the like. Not enough attention is paid to the music itself. And that's why with this article I'm focusing entirely on the music, one song at a time.

01. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - This opening track really sets the mood for the entire album. The song shifts styles abruptly just like the album does from song to song. And of course the crowd noise and the entire "Sgt. Pepper" concept are introduced here.

02. "With a Little Help from my Friends" - I know there are quite a few people who think that Joe Cocker really did the definitive version of this song, but I'm definitely not one of those people. I like Cocker's version, but the original contains the real magic to my ears.

03. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - Now that the original mono version is available easily (with the release of The Beatles in Mono Box Set) it's great to be able to hear what this album sounds like in mono (how it was "meant to be heard" originally.) And the heavy vocal effects on this song is probably one of the more interesting things about the mono mixes for me.

04. "Getting Better" - This song so perfectly encapsulates the sound of this album and what it's all about to me.

05. "Fixing a Hole" - Possibly the best lyrics Paul McCartney ever wrote. Another one of my favorites on an album filled with favorites.

06. "She's Leaving Home" - This song is very interesting to hear in mono because it's actually sped up (and thus pitched up) in the mono mix. It has a lot more energy that way. Definitely worth a listen!

07. "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" - What a deliciously weird song this is. It's brilliant how "far out" this album takes you. It's like a journey to different parts of the world (and certainly there is time traveling involved as well.)

08. "Within You Without You" - Speaking of "far out" how about we go all the way to India? Some people don't like this song because it doesn't fit with their preconceived notions of what music is supposed to sound like. To me this song is brilliant because of that very reason. We shouldn't limit ourselves.

09. "When I'm Sixty-Four" - I love how quickly the musical styles change with this album. We go from a carnival to India to music hall!

11. "Lovely Rita" - I have to admit that tracks #10 and #11 are probably my least favorites on the album. But considering I quite like both of those tracks, that says a lot about how much I love this album.

11. "Good Morning Good Morning" - John was inspired by a Kellogg's Corn Flakes commercial to write this song. Pretty cool lead guitar bits played by Paul.

12. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)" - This song, of course, ties together the whole album by linking us back to the first song. It gives the impression that everything we've been hearing (even though it's all of these wildly different styles) has been a part of one big performance by this fictional band.

13. "A Day in the Life" - This is the best example of John & Paul combining their ideas to be something greater than they were on their own. This is also the best song ever recorded by anyone. It's just pure brilliance.

However, she is soon to find out that Jacob has a supernatural secret of his own. With this highly anticipated movie coming out this November many fans will be having themed costume parties for Halloween or simply having release parties for the night New Moon comes out. Whatever party a fan is planning a great idea is to give out Twilight party favors. These will not only be cute accents to the party planning but will also give TwiHards some great collectible items. With winter approaching, cold weather will definitely come and be causing chapped lips everywhere. Help out your female guests and give them a fun looking favor with Twilight lip balm. These tins of high quality lip balm come in with pictures of popular characters from Twilight and New Moon on them. If any of your friends are on team Jacob they will love the tins with the tougher looking Jacob on them. These are great because your friends can immediately use them and they can also be paired with any other favors you come up with in gift bags.

Another great item is Twilight candy jars. Since its October a natural favor to give guests at your party is candy. However it can be troublesome to make packages or bags to hold them. Why not give them favor containers that are so good that they are also favors? Like the other items I mentioned they have pictures of the actors from the Twilight and New Moon movies in character. There are even some new ones such as a shirtless Edward in Italy about to expose the vampire world. These items are sure to go so fast you will wish that you got extras.

Edible favors are a great idea to complement the range guest gifts that you will be handing out at your event. Make sure that they match either the vampire or werewolf theme. For example you can give out baked treats like Doggie Kibble trail mix or red velvet mini cupcakes. You can also give interesting items such as edible fake blood. You can also take a page from the book and Movie and try out some Italian sweets and chocolates to match up with your theme. Edible favors will help to put a "sweet" point on your festivities.

Candles are also a great idea. Give out votive candles that have moon themes or Twilight themed votive candles that have pictures from New Moon. You can also pick out some that have Tulip motifs since this is the key image on the cover of the novel version of New Moon. These are great because candles fit in with the Halloween mood and are just simply popular favors at the moment. You will end up giving guests items that they will definitely enjoy.

A Novice's Guide to Carp Fishing Equipment

By Tony G. Stevenson

One of the most popular freshwater fish for anglers is the carp, which gets a lot of attention in Europe, but is still struggling to catch on in the United States. Carp fishing is a popular outdoor activity, and the large size and good fight of these fish is sure to help the growth of this sport continue. One thing every would be carper needs, however, is good fishing equipment.

The first piece of fishing gear to look at is a good carp fishing rod. A suitable fishing rod should be at least six feet long (more is okay), and also medium action. This is the best combination of strength and flexibility to make carp fishing a challenge, but give you a good chance to lead even the trophy sized fish.

When you're considering fishing rods, obviously you also need to consider reels. Open faced reels should also be the only type you consider, although this is true of almost any good fishing rod. In addition, you want the reel to be large enough to hold at least 150 yards 12 pound test line.

Finding the right bait is important with any type of fish. Carp aren't picky eaters, but some bait is going to work better than others. While many bass anglers love rapalas, the best tackle for carp is actually sticky and smelly bait. There are many specialty carp baits available, so test around and see what the carp in your area like best.

There is also the matter of "pods." A pod is a set up that holds three rods at once for the carp angler, allowing the fisherman to be hands free during the wait for a trophy carp to take the bait. These are optional pieces of fishing gear that are often used by more seasoned carpers.

Don't forget about the fishing line, either. Good fishing line for carp is a minimum of 12 pound test line, and higher can be better. Many carp fishermen prefer line made from Kevlar.

While advanced fishing tackle and gear is going to cost more, the good news is that beginners can get started for pretty cheap. While fishing might not be the least expensive of hobbies, learning to carp fish is a deeply rewarding hobby that provides hours more entertainment than a movie or night out to an expensive bar.

Every angler knows you have to have the right gear to get the job done. If you want to really enjoy carp fishing, get the right tackle and gear early on and you'll be glad you did.
