Shukumine meditated on how to make defense movements more adaptable and universal. Taido's techniques offered many innovations: the addition of spinning and twisting movements, gymnastic maneuvers, speedy and effective footwork, and a changing body angle. The name Taido means "art of the body."

So what makes Taido unique? Taido techniques utilize changes of the body's bearing in order to facilitate simultaneous defense with attacking movements. Taido also relies on the use of footwork to take advantageous angles and distance to the opponent. This footwork is functionally connected to the body mechanics that form the basis of each kick, punch, or other technique. Taido uses dynamic body movement to create powerful strikes and manipulate the spatial relationship with the opponent.

Taido's thought process is based on appropriate reaction to dynamic situations instead of preset patterns of attack and protection. Taido's movements are also designed for improving health and longevity.

Taido's original purpose was, and continues to be, the application of scientific methodology and traditional values to the evolution of the martial arts. According to its founder, Taido's ultimate objective is to enable its practitioners to perform at a high level in society.

With the days growing shorter and the mercury gradually dropping, flounder are on the move. With the approach of autumn, southern flounder begin to make their way out of the shallows, with crowds of these fish making their way through every available route to the deeper waters of the gulf. Yes, the flounder spawning season is upon us once again according to the latest fishing reports. Anglers who enjoy fishing for the saddle blanket flounder are already enjoying an action packed Texas fishing season this fall.

Captain Skip James counts himself one of these flounder fanatics. A longtime guide, Captain James prefers Sabine Lake for his angling. For many years, he's been following the movements of these fish and using telemetry to study the patterns of the fall flounder run. He tends to base his patterns on the movements of the larger females, since as he knows, there are always plenty of males right behind her, eagerly anticipating the drop of the female's eggs.

As a long time flounder expert, Captain James is as good as any fishing reports we've seen as far as Texas fishing for flounder is concerned, so it carries serious weight when he tells us "The flounder run's actually at about the halfway point right now and will peak very soon. It typically starts in mid September and ends in mid December." While the flounder make their way to the gulf's deep waters, things are pretty easy for the experienced angler. "I just use a 4" bayside speck grub - it's all I need and we've been landing flounder up to 6 pounds. If the rest of the run is this good, it'll go down as one of the best years I've ever seen," says James.

No less of a Texas fishing authority than Galveston's Phil Ortiz, inventor of the "Flounder Pounder" tells us to ignore the common thinking on the flounder run and get out on the water ASAP. "It's not only the temperature that tells the flounder it's time to spawn. As the days get shorter, they start to move to the gulf. It does pick up after the first cold snap, but I know I'm landing plenty of flounder already."

Phil Ortiz prefers to use artificial for the pancake predators. "Over the years, I got tired of flounder short striking them." This ignited Ortiz's designing of a lure called the "Flounder Pounder".

Another Galveston angler, Jeff Boudreaux is one of the rare year round flounder fishermen. In the fall, Boudreaux likes to get in on the excitement of the flounder run, employing the kind of pitching techniques most anglers use for bass in stick beds. As he tells us with a grin, "If it's good enough for bass, it's good enough for flounder. Once I feel that first thump, I set the hook as fast as possible."

Boudreaux also chooses soft plastics for flounder, reporting particularly good results with the Brown's Corky Devil. This suspended bait helped him land a 7 lb flounder just last week and confirmed this as his lure of choice.

"Those looking to catch flounder during the fall run should look at the Galveston Channel or Sea Wolf Park Flat," states Boudreaux. "Live baiters do very well using mud minnows and finger mullet on a Carolina rig."

An angler on the lower coast, Cody Stripling works the grassy structures and deep water-adjacent areas of the Lower Laguna Madre using a trolling motor when in search of flounder.

According to Stripling, flounder fishing is a little slower on the lower coast. "Flounder have been scattered lately but I expect when cooler weather reaches us down here we will see more on the move."

"Grassy points, guts, and drop offs along deeper water like the ICW are my primary focus during the run," states Stripling. "The water on the Lower Laguna Madre is very clear and it allows us to really see distinct areas adjacent to deeper water that really hold flounder. Pitch baits on the pockets and points along the edge and you will catch flounder."

"Soft plastics on 1/4 ounce lead heads work great for flounder," he recalls. "I work them with a bass retrieve by bumping it on the bottom and letting it sit for two or three seconds before jerking it again.

Stop short of getting deep far enough to where you would be in a relaxed low position so there is still tension on your leg muscles and then slowly raise your body back up again to resume the original standing position. Go down slowly and come up slowly, counting approximately four seconds on the way down and another four seconds on the way up. Do 15 reps like this each day and gradually increase the number of reps after a week or so of practice. In addition to building power and muscle in your legs, this exercise also tones your thighs.

UFC 92 was a high impact affair, with Rashad Evans defeating Forrest Griffin by TKO to win the light heavyweight title and Frank Mir knocking out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira to claim the UFC interim heavyweight title. The event had been dubbed The Ultimate 2008 and every one of the main cards six matches ended via TKO.

While nominally taking subordinate status to the Evans/Griffin main event the most shocking result by far was Frank Mirs second round TKO stoppage of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Nogueira was the overwhelming favorite coming into the fight and had never been stopped inside the distance during a career where hed faced the best of the best: Fedor Emelianenko (three times), Josh Barnett (twice), Semmy Schilt and Mirko Cro Cop among many others.

Mir, meanwhile, had been on the verge of a full time move to the broadcast booth before his victory over WWE superstar turned MMA fighter Brock Lesnar. The conventional wisdom concerning Mir was that hed never fully recovered from a serious motorcycle accident in 2004. He eventually returned to the octagon, and after two TKO losses in his first three comeback fights began to consider the possibility that he just didnt have it any more.

When the fight against Brock Lesnar was signed, the perception among most fans was that Mir was a high profile setup for the former WWE champ"a big name on the downside of his career that would be physically overwhelmed by the strength and athleticism of his opponent. The expectation was that after a one-sided loss to Lesnar that Mir would transition into the next phase of his career as a broadcaster.

Lesnar manhandled Mir from the opening horn, taking him down and landing punishing hammer fists on the ground. That was rendered irrelevant, however, when Lesnar made a rookie mistake and dangled his leg in easy reach of the BJJ blackbelt. Even with the submission victory, however, the perception was that Mir had gotten lucky when Lesnar made a rookie mistake.

There would be no such reprieve against Nogueira, according to many pundits, as he was too experienced and too good of a BJJ player in his own right. Mos gave Mir little chance to prevail in this matchup against a highly experienced veteran that had never been stopped inside the distance.

The fight was certainly one-sided, but it was Mir who was in control throughout. From the opening horn he demonstrated surprisingly sharp striking skills, and knocked Nogueira down twice in the first round.

Though Mir appeared in full control of the fight as the second round began, the end would come with startling suddenness and brutality. After a low kick attempt by Nogueira, Mirs counter tagged his opponent and he followed up with a big right hook that sent the Brazilian crashing to the canvas.

In the light heavyweight championship match, Forrest Griffin got off to a good start in his title defense by using his superior height and reach and an impressive array of kicks to keep Rashad Evans just out of range for two full rounds. That changed dramatically in the third, as Evans ended the fight with a punishing punching attack.

The most highly anticipated match on the undercard also featured a lopsided TKO finish as Quinton Rampage Jackson dominated Wanderlei Silva in the third fight between the two men. It was Jacksons first fight since his well publicized hit and run incident in Orange County, California and he looked very sharp throughout before bringing the contest to a close with a perfectly placed left hook to the cheekbone. Silva immediately collapsed to the canvas and the referee started to step in before he hit the ground.

The Horo Versus the Arrow

One of the most interesting pieces of armor used by the feudal lords of old Japan to protect them from raining arrows of pursuing archers is the Horo. It is made of lightweight cloth presumably silk, worn by messengers of nobility and is strategically designed with large colorful emblems to make them stand out in the battlefield. With the patterns, it is very easy to spot a messenger when they arrive.

In English, Horo means arrow catcher or arrow entangler. A lot of scholars are suspicious of the Horo's capability of stopping a speeding arrow in its tracks and it's reputation as a life saver. Because the cloak is made of sheer cloth, it is hard to imagine it being able to halt a speeding dart. Furthermore, the large colorful print makes the wearer a very easy target on the field.

I was watching a show on the History Channel a few weeks back and the episode was about the Horo. Like the many people with doubts, the researchers were quite suspicious of the capes ability. Based on their research, they recreated a cape made of silk and printed on it a large colorful emblem. They tied it to a dummy, and stood it against a fan to simulate a warrior riding a horse.

The next scenes were very interesting. Contrary to what others thought that the designs would make the wearer a very easy target for enemy archers, what they saw was just the opposite. When the wind blew against the cape, it danced and moved around, making it a very hard target. It was a confusing vision and looking at it you really wouldn't know where behind the Horo the dummy really is.

The next step then would be finding out if the cape or what looks like a cloak could really stop an arrow. When they tried to shoot the dummy with sharp arrows, amazingly the darts where entangled in the dancing cloak and were actually stopped. The arrow looses speed as soon as it gets entangled on the Horo and falls off to the ground.

After gathering the results, the next question was if a cape wearer would actually entrust her life on a piece of silk. They wanted to test how it would feel like to be atop a horse wearing a Horo and be pursued by enemy archers. They simulated the scenario but they dulled the arrows to protect the horse. They used professional archers and you could see the arrows raining on the cape wearer. Amazingly, the wearer came out of it unscathed.

When the wearer was interviewed, he related that he could actually hear the arrows hit the cape but he could just feel them loose their power and drop to the ground. After all the experiences they had they concluded that the Horo's reputation was real and they would trust it with their life if they were actual Japanese warriors.

Even though it has been proven that the Horo's ability is not a myth, it will just remain to be a reminder of Japan's rich history. Bows and arrows are no longer part of modern warfare. They are no longer considered nor used in modern battle so there is no need for an arrow catcher anymore. Although archery is not employed in battle, the art of shooting arrows is still far from dying.

Today archery is considered a serious sport exercising skills of discipline and precision. Not only is it a sport, it is also a means of recreation. I guess people would always want and will always try to hit a target.
